What is Net Metering and How to Get a Net Meter Installed for your Bengaluru Home?
Net Metering is the mechanism of billing solar power users for the net energy they export and import from the grid.
How Does It Work?
Rooftop solar energy systems produce electricity that is utilized by the appliances in your home. Any excess electricity generated can be sold to your utility provider a.k.a. BESCOM. You can earn Rs 2 to 2.5 per unit that you supply back to the grid and in turn significantly reduce your electricity bills unto 90%. In case you generate more than you consume, you will be credited with an equivalent amount directly to your bank account.
How to Get Net Meter Installed?
Before you begin, ensure that your solar energy system provider is empaneled with BESCOM as a vendor, and you have secured a proposal from them based on your energy consumption needs. To get your net metering done, prior to your installation process, you need to register yourself on the BESCOM portal and apply for Solar Rooftop Connection under the MNRE National Portal for Solar Rooftop (NAPS) Scheme.
You need fill all the required details such as the type of scheme, type of connection and proposed capacity which you can find on your E-bill and solar energy system proposal.
Watch the video below to understand the step-by-step process to register yourself with BESCOM.
The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has framed SRTPV Regulations, 2016 for implementation of Solar Rooftop Photovoltaic Plants and its amendments, Tariff Orders, and Guidelines.
Application Fee:
After completing the application, you need to pay the below mentioned registration fees
• Rs 1500 for system sizes up to 5KW
• Rs 5000 for system sizes above 5KW
Once you have completed your payment you can e- sign the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) of 25 years as per KERC determined tariffs with BESCOM.
What is a PPA?
A PPA, or Power Purchase Agreement, is a contract between a power producer and a buyer - BESCOM (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited), which outlines the terms under which BESCOM purchases electricity generated from renewable sources, such as solar, at agreed-upon rates.
Finally download your PPA and work approval letter which needs to be submitted to the BESCOM associate after your installation is complete.
Inspection & Approval
The BESCOM associate installs the net meter at your home after inspecting your documentation and solar energy system. Once the net metering process is completed, the portal will generate a commissioning certificate, post which you will need to upload your bank details along with your cancelled cheque.
Start Saving
After a period of one month, you will start receiving your net metered electricity bills with reduced costs up to 90%.
